Weddings are often a major production where live music is an important contributor. I’ve written this article to clarify how musicians can fit into your day, which types of musicians to use and when to use them.

Musicians will typically perform during one (or more) of three clear segments of your function:

1. The ceremony

The music you choose for your ceremony is perhaps the most important as it contributes so much to the personality of the wedding itself. Couples may opt for a song with personal meaning (“our song”) or one of many traditional wedding pieces. The musicians may be anything from a string duo to a church organist to a singer accompanied by guitar. Obviously, the structure of your ceremony is up to you, but the most common opportunities for music during the ceremony are:

  • The bridal party entrance

Some brides even choose one piece for the attendants and another for the bride, but this can be clunky. Don’t forget that the entire entrance usually starts and ends within one-and-a-half minutes and most songs are at least 3 minutes in length.

  • Signing of the register

This is the best time for a special piece of music. Signing typically takes at least 4 minutes so there’s plenty of time for a song of significance. And the performer will have a captive audience!

  • After the announcement of marriage

This moment calls for some joyous music.

2. Immediately before and after the ceremony

Often at a garden or function-centre wedding the ceremony leads out of cocktail service and is followed by informal nibbles and drinks. Live music can add warmth and atmosphere during these intermissions. The same musicians who perform for the ceremony will often play before and afterwards as well.

3. The Reception

Your wedding reception is a party and you will want musicians who can inject the mood you want to create. Many couples will tell musicians they want “dance music” but don’t forget this term has countless possible meanings: from ballroom to hip-hop. The more clearly you can imagine your own event the more clearly you’ll be able to communicate your needs to any potential musicians.

You may also want your reception musicians to

  • Provide background music during dinner service

  • Rehearse and perform your “bridal waltz” if it is not already in their repertoire.

I hope I’ve given you an overview of how musicians are most typically utilized at weddings. For more general advice on booking musicians check out this article.
